‘A good teacher can inspire hope, ignite the imagination and instill a love for learning’

I have been into the system of education from last 20 years, first as a student and then as a teacher, and I feel that in this globally competitive world, education has evolved in leaps and bounds in recent years. Today, the world is completely digitalised. Students have all the knowledge available to them in just a click away.

Therefore, the need of the hour for teachers is to be even more innovative and creative with their approach in teaching methodology. As an educator, we need to provide students with creativity, problem-solving skills, a passion for learning and endless learning opportunities. I, as a facilitator, feel that the best teaching practices at schools can help the child develop all these skills and abilities, thereby developing them holistically, expanding their horizons and empowering them to compete with the world.

The best and innovative teaching pedagogies are an inherent part of the curriculum developed at MREI. Here, we have been following some really beneficial pedagogy in the journey of learning which has helped us nurture the gifted and the very talented students of our school.

As a part of English faculty, I believe teaching English has always been a challenge in schools; being the second language, a language not so frequently used at home. Thus, to keep the students interested in learning the language, it is quite important for us to adapt the policies which will help promote learner’s autonomy and improve language proficiency.

Some of the best practices that we follow in our classes are:

  1. Teaching through Games: Various common games like snakes and ladders, Jenga, flash cards, Pictionary, Spin the wheel; charades are used to make learning amusing and enjoyable for the students where they need not get into the trouble of understanding through traditional methods. Students practice many grammar topics learnt through these games and thoroughly enjoy the sessions.
  2. Role plays, Debates, Group Discussions, Spoofs: They are quite effective method when it comes to teaching language. It helps enhancing communication skills. It is quite beneficial pedagogy to get the message across. Spoofs are a great way to give the students freedom to imitate any story humorously making class lively and students imaginative.
  3. Peer teaching: The students are divided in groups and are made to comprehend the lesson in groups. They are then asked to explain the lesson to their peers with teacher’s assistance. It is a great tool to improve student learning as direct interaction between students. It promotes active learning and students feel more comfortable in communicating with their peers.

I believe that the secret to teaching is not to lecture the students but to give them freedom and invite them into a journey of discovery. Like a ship in the ocean without sail or engine, let them drift slowly into the lesson while they listen, throw a rock into the water and create the wave. The role of the child is to create a way to ride into that wave to a new world.
