Improving Reading Habits in Kids with Fantasy Books

The habit of reading is one of the best qualities a person can possess. Be it fiction or non-fiction, reading a book not only improves your vocabulary or the flair in language, it also imparts knowledge. Reading also builds a person’s character and helps in boosting confidence and thus, enhances your social skills. Books are known to be a man’s friend for a reason!

Recently, to inculcate the wonderful habit of reading among students, Manav Rachna International School, Charmwood has started a book reading club. Here, children have issued books from the library so that they can invest their free time at home in reading. The books are also sent home with the intention that the children might inculcate values like responsibility and an increased attention span.

So, to celebrate this wonderful world of fantasy, imagination and suspension of belief about reality, I am listing the top 5 Fantasy Books for kids that I hope would be enjoyed by the young minds as much as I did while growing up:

Top Five Fantasy Books for Kids

Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie:- Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up. The story features real characters that are flawed. Peter is quite selfish and this has consequences, even in the perfect never-grow-up world he lives in. The tale of Peter Pan is the perfect childhood story and one that hits on an essential element of the human psyche.

The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis:- This is the ultimate series for younger readers. It’s got talking animals, children protagonists, evil witches, adventures galore, and the clash between good and evil.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl:-  This is a story full of imagination, adventure, zany characters, and a moral lesson for children and adults alike. It’s a novel that’s inspired not one movie, but two.

Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll:- Like many of the best children’s classics, this book can be read on two different levels entirely, a simple child’s adventure story in a magical land or a metaphorical journey of double meanings, symbolisms and clever wordplays.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum :- The story chronicles the adventures of a young farm girl named Dorothy in the magical Land of Oz, after she and her pet dog Toto are swept away from their Kansas home by a cyclone. A true classic and not at all like a movie!
