Manav Rachna International School, Ludhiana, fuses academics and extra-curricular activities to make the teaching learning process effective and meaningful for the students. One such venture in this regard was undertaken through the Edutrips organized in September.
The tiny tots of BLOOMZ and TODDLERS visited Pizza hut in Dugri to facilitate learning associated with the theme, ‘It’s Yummy’. The little ones enjoyed acting as a baker. They witnessed the process of making a pizza and learnt about the ingredients. All the children went to the cooking area and saw the chef making pizza dough and garlic bread. The young learners were very excited to see how different varieties of pizzas and shakes are made. This trip helped them know the world around them better and also go beyond the boundaries of their immediate social world.
The lovely little cherubs of Kindergarten went for an Edutrip to a furniture house on Pakhowal Road, Ludhiana; this helped them develop a sound hold on the concept, “What is a home?”, which is the essential question for their unit of PARAGON. The young learners were bubbling with enthusiasm and all excited to board the school bus and gain a firsthand experience of what they would learn in the classroom. They browsed through every corner of the furniture house with inquisitive eyes and asked a host of questions to settle their queries. The teachers briefed them about different houses, rooms in a house and their utility. The students also learnt to conduct themselves in a public space taking due care of the property around them. The students came back very happy to school and expressed their learning through drawings. They even tried to frame words that they added to their vocabulary through the Edutrip.
Another Edutrip was organized to a Supermarket in Phase 1, Dugri for Grades I to V. The purpose of the Edu trip was to help children learn shopping etiquette, look for their requirement in the Supermarket, make wise choices, read basics like M.R.P, manufacturing date, expiry date, etc. The students prepared a list of items that they would buy before leaving the campus. They were very excited to shop independently. They also estimated the cost of the items they would purchase and compared it with the actual cost thereafter. The teachers helped them look for the items of their choice and select keeping in mind the cost, quality and utility of the item. The students enjoyed the act of getting their bill processed. They also wrote their reflections and learning in their journals which they carried home. The students applied the basic computation operations, concepts of profit and loss, estimation, rounding off in addition to adding words to their vocabulary through journaling based on the Edutrip. Besides this, they also learnt to be independent and gained confidence in dealing with strangers.
These Edutrip surely proved to be fruitful and offered a wonderful opportunity for experiential learning to the students.
