Manav Rachna Group of Educational Institutions believes that education is only possible when the body is healthy, the mind is at peace, and the heart is open to receiving. ‘Creating Good Humans,’ is what we want, and we can achieve this only if the focus is on the holistic development of students and not just on the development of the mind.

In India along with academic curricula sessions, sports, popularly known as Physical Education is considered essential and inseparable part of the curriculum because academics and sports are two sides of the same coin. Indulging in sports activities leads to the formation of an individual’s personality and character. This contributes to a person’s holistic development. Sporting activities in some ways are a practical demonstration of the entire disciplines one learns in school. In some or the other way, every sport is based on the basic fundamentals of science, math, and even geography at times.

While many subjects at school are taught exclusively in the classroom—sports and physical education give an excellent opportunity for students to get outside of their comfort zone, test their limits, be active, and work on honing a variety of skills.

There are many educational benefits of sports, apart from not just the physical gratification of being fit. Athletics positively impact students’ academic success and contribute to improving their health and lifestyle.

Let’s evaluate How Sports Benefit while Learning?

  1. Improves Health

“What makes something special is not just what you have to gain, but what you feel there is to lose.”-Andre Agassi

Playing outdoor sports exposes children to the best exercises and helps them to maintain overall fitness. Regular physical activities can assist in developing a healthy body, healthy heart, strong bones, and improved lung function, along with the prevention of many chronic diseases. Sports can aid in the management of diabetes, weight loss, improved blood circulation, and stress.

Students learn the value of living a healthy lifestyle through sports. Obesity or excessive weight gain is prevented, and healthy eating habits are promoted but through sports. Young people who participate in sports often have more balanced intake of food, fruits, and vegetables. They are less likely to be unhealthy or unfit and are more likely to grow up to be physically active adults.

  1. Boosts Confidence

“An athlete cannot run with money in his pockets. He must run with hope in his heart and dreams in his head.”-Emil Zatopek.

Sport is not all about winning or achieving goals. It is about working together as a team. Friendly competition is what sports aim for. Engaging in some or other form of sports enhances confidence in students, inculcates a sense of accomplishment hence achievement is attained as the confidence enhancer.  Sports instill a spirit of perseverance which is important in achieving academic success that can be carried over into students’ academic careers.

  1. Develops Leadership Skills

Every team requires a leader, whether playing for the school team, state team, and national team or with a group of friends. As students grow, they are exposed to leadership positions, which help them be good leaders and make them take confident and decisive decisions. Sports help make good leaders and team builders.

  1. Teaches Teamwork

Individuals that can work well with others make up an effective team. Teamwork is an essential important skill in the workplace, and physical education is typically the first introduction to it for youngsters. Many sports teams believe that any day the team is more important than the individual.

  1. Teaches Discipline

Failure is an aspect of sports that is underrated. To succeed in life, we must have discipline, and sports activities are one of the best ways to demonstrate these qualities. Also, Sport’s basic character, with clearly defined winners, and losers, results in natural highs and lows, losses and victories prepare youngsters later in life to handle different kinds of situations.

A sport is an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that hard work pays off. Persistence and a never-say-die attitude will be required to succeed in any endeavor. Youngsters learn the value of putting in the effort to attain one’s goals through sports.

Sports activities instill discipline, which is beneficial in all aspects of life. Students learn physical, mental, and tactical training through sporting activities. This helps the students in building their focus and having a clear vision. Since these traits are also required in enhancing academic performance- sports and physical education help students to be good at academics.

“One man can be a crucial ingredient in a team, but one man cannot make them a team.” Kareem Abdul Jabbar

Sports benefit one’s overall health and not just the physical, social and psychological aspects. A student who participates in sports has higher self-esteem, better social interaction, more confidence, and a more optimistic attitude and approach toward life. According to various research, students who participate in sports earn higher grades and have greater self-confidence.

  1. Helps in Building skills.

“Leadership, like coaching, is fighting for the hearts and souls of men and getting them to believe in you.”  Eddie Robinson

Skills like teamwork, leadership, patience, discipline, learning from failure, sportsmanship, etc., are developed only when children play sports regularly.  These skills are equally important in when it comes to studies and management.

I would like to quote, Kapil Dev Sir, “Apart from education, you need good health, and for that, you need to play sports.”

According to him, children who participate in sports as part of their school curriculum grow up to be more physically fit. This transforms them into more communicative and outgoing individuals who are stronger and more competitive.  As a result, their confidence is boosted, and they are exposed to new life situations. It also instills in them a sense of hard work, hard effort in children from an early age.  Sport has far-reaching benefits that go beyond the physical phenomenon. Exercise and participation in sports activities can substantially impact a child’s academic success in other areas.

Ultimately, I would like to conclude that it is a myth that sports help ONLY to get us physically fit! I believe, it helps in the overall development of the children, be it physical, emotional, social, mental, or even spiritual. Focus, concentration, determination, willpower, inner strength, planning, critical thinking, leadership skills, team building, and problem-solving skills-in fact, every aspect of growth and learning is covered and taken care of if one indulges in any kind of sports activity.

Muhammad Ali has aptly said, “The man who has no imagination has no wings.” Sports teach the greatest lesson a human being can ever learn: to never give up hope and to keep trying to attain the destination!

Finally, I would like to quote, Michael Jordan, “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed them. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
