“Everything we do, every thought we’ve ever had, is produced by the human brain. But exactly how it operates remains one of the biggest unsolved mysteries, and it seems the more we probe its secrets, the more surprises we find”. Neil deGrasse Tyson
The two hemispheres of the brain’s cerebrum consist of the left brain and the right brain. The left hemisphere is generally responsible for speech and language, while the right hemisphere takes care of creativity and spatial relations.
According to many people, behaviour is dominated by that side of the brain which works more for them. But if one finds any task difficult, then it does not mean that, that one particular side of the brain doesn’t work for him/her. Skills or challenges have more to do with how the two sides of the brain work in unison.
In this interesting blog post by Ms. Sunidhi Kakkar a seasoned mentor of Manav Rachna International School, Sector 21 C, it is explained how both side of a human brain is equally important for our well-being. Let us read and be well informed about our Brian which rules our demeanor.~ Editor
FROM THE AUTHOR’S DESK
LEFT BRAIN OR RIGHT BRAIN?
WHICH SIDE OF THE BRAIN WORKS FOR YOU?
“Where will I find the best school for my child?”
“What are the best co-curricular activities for my child?”
“Which school will best fit my child’s requirements?”
These are some of the concerns that every parent has before selecting a school. Well! Worry no longer! Manav Rachna International School Sector 21C, Faridabad, focuses on equipping your child with the right skills to build a solid foundation for lifelong learning. The educational environment at our school is designed in a way that aims to cater to every child’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs for their 360-degree development.
With an objective to nurture well rounded children, Manav Rachna understands the functionality of human brain’s left and right hemispheres, which are unique in their own ways. The left side of the brain depends on academic drills, quizzes, periodical tests, repetition of exercises and linear and methodical approaches, helping children enhance and strengthen their memory. In contrast, the right brain accentuates on creative, dramatic, visual, musical and spatial skills.
Considering the importance of both these hemispheres, it is pivotal to provide a stimulating platform which is ideal for a child’s full brain functionality. Exposure to academics along with the right mix of performing arts, visual arts, sports, future skills, and life skills are essential in creating the future generations. No wonder, MRIS 21C has been awarded “the Best Middle School in Faridabad” where lesson planning and activities are strategically designed to unfurl the innate potential of every child.
Now you must be wondering how MRIS 21C, the best international school, amplifies these abilities in its students.
To develop a logical, analytical, fact-oriented and calculative child, we aim to build these skills right from the foundation years. The teaching-learning process progresses from concrete to abstract in a sequential manner, which not only strengthens their logical reasoning but also instills confidence and leadership skills. For instance, quantification and other numerical concepts are introduced to children with objective-oriented materials that expedite their rote learning and memorization. Besides textbooks, plenty of educational materials are provided to children to understand the concepts of dimensions, classifications, number concepts, analyzing and data handling.
In addition to this, conceptual learning through reasoning, exploration, skilling and technology satiates the curious minds and makes the learning joyful. When learning goes beyond the classrooms, it stimulates their left brain which is ready to absorb all the information available to them at hand. When children get an opportunity to observe not just the outcome, but also the process, they are able to retain the knowledge acquired for lifelong resulting in an experience of a lifetime. Nature-walks, Astronomical field trips, agricultural field trips, geological field trips, a trip to learn about culinary arts, and trips to museum provide real-world experiences to children that enhances their critical learning skills and gives them a chance to think about a topic from different perspective.
Language acquisition is another important domain which augments in the children’s brain development. Therefore, engaging children in thought-provoking conversations not only enhances their speaking abilities but also expressions, poise and buoyancy. One such exclusive feature of progressive schools like MRIS 21C is, that through Effective Expressions, a robust and comprehensive instructional programme, which carves students into impactful speakers who can convey their ideas with emphasis. Idiomatic expressions, new vocabulary word and Personification are effectively learnt through stories, poems and dramatization. All such activities are embedded in our pedagogy making learning effective and impactful.
Committed at developing a well-rounded child, we never leave any stone unturned in feeding the right hemisphere of the brain. Therefore, providing a platform for learning different moves and mudras, along with drama, various acts replete with expressions, melody and rhythm, performing arts interpretation is a great way to get moving and focus our right brain exploration.
In order to build a creative bent of mind, visual art is undertaken to help children represent their thoughts, and skills. It is an essential outlet for creativity and emotion, making it possible to express oneself, other than words and writing. Skills like sculpture, clay modeling, painting, help children in organizing their thoughts and putting forth fervently. All these invigorating activities are an intrinsic part of Manav Rachna International School, Sector 21C, Faridabad.
Yet another important vertical for boosting our brain is Sports. At Manav Rachna, we provide students with a rigorous sporting culture, beginning right from the early years. Dedicated to exposing the children with various sports not only aids in enhancing their physical well-being but also helps in bettering their ability to filter out noise and static. This enables children to process information and situations well. It further makes them more focused and aware. Running, gymnastics, taekwondo, soccer, skating, badminton, table tennis, carom, chess, well the list is endless, but the benefits derived are priceless for the proper brain functioning.
Hence, educational ecosystem which rests on balance in all these verticals fosters creativity, imagination, equity, pragmatism and expressions. Children nurtured in such an environment have better understanding of the real world as they observe meticulously and calculatedly. With the right amalgamation of academics and co-curricular activities, children thrive at the heart of learning to become a transformational leader of a new tomorrow.
