Manav Rachna International School, Mohali is hosting the three-day Punjab State Fencing Championship, which began in the state-of-the-art indoor sports arena of the school on Friday. More than 300 boys and girls from all over the state are participating in the state-level tournament in the under-10, under-12, under-14 and under-17 categories.
Inaugurating the championship in the indoor sports arena of the school by lighting a lamp, Punjab Health and Family Welfare Minister Mr Brahm Mohindra, who is also the President of the Punjab Fencing Association, stressed on the need for encouraging youngsters to take up sports to channelize their energy in the right direction. Also present on the occasion were Dr. Amit Bhalla- Vice President, Manav Rachna Educational Institutions; Mr. Sunny Bansal- Executive Director, MRIS Mohali; Mr. Tarlochan Singh Dogra; Joint Secretary, Punjab State Fencing Association; Mr. Anil Arora, Secretary General, Punjab Fencing Associations; Mr. Ronjan Sodhi – Olympian Shooter, Arjuna Awardee and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Awardee; Mr. Jagmohan Singh Kahlon- Secretary Mohali, District Fencing Associations grace the occasion.
A part of Olympics since 1896, fencing is a test of participants’ speed, reflexes, flexibility and endurance. Players from 14 Districts of Punjab: Amritsar, Bathinda, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Firozpur, Kapurthala, Ludhiana, Mukatsar Sahib, Tarn Taran, Patiala, Mansa and Mohali are participating in the Championship.
On the first day, the students of MRIS Mohali performed very well and bagged one Gold and two 2 Bronze Medals.
Gold Medal – Divaa, Grade 2
Bronze Medal – Gurpartap, Grade 4
Bronze Medal – Anshul, Grade 3.
